Christmas trees are a perfect match for the chilly days of December - their glowing lights add warmth to the early dark evenings. From a Feng Shui perspective, they help balance the cool yin energy with soft, warm yang energy, making all that festive sparkle especially welcome. However, the placement of your tree can influence your home’s luck—some spots attract auspicious energy, while others might have the opposite effect!

Teri’s Top Tip: When placing your Christmas tree in the main living area, position it diagonally in the corner opposite the entrance. This location is a strong, supportive sector for attracting positive energy. As you enter, the tree will be the first thing to catch your attention to instantly set the tone for the festive season, lift the spirits of all who come in, and fill the house with Christmas cheer. Each property is unique, but depending on the compass direction of this corner, it may bring an extra boost in love, wealth, or happiness while the tree is up.

Another aspect to consider from the Feng Shui point of view is “proportion”.  A single tiny tree swimming in a massive room will have no positive impact on the ambience whatsoever, and a huge tree that hits the ceiling, claiming the entire room, can have a negative effect on people's moods.  Most people are very susceptible to visual disproportions, even though they don't realise it; one of the joys of Feng Shui is that when you adjust the space by bringing in more balance, you notice that folk start to feel at ease immediately.

I’m often asked how to decorate a Christmas tree with Feng Shui. If you're after a specific look or taste, a style expert can be more helpful—instead, Feng Shui focuses on the “vibe” and the psychological effect on the room. Something can look beautiful but still lack good Feng Shui. Ideally, a Christmas tree should fit smoothly into the space, without major disruptions to the decor or furniture arrangement. Problems can arise when the tree causes everything else to feel displaced.

A few years ago, one of my clients reached out during the Christmas season to share a difficult update. Her husband had lost his long-term job after his employer went bankrupt, and rising mortgage rates were putting a financial strain on their young family. Knowing the positive effects of Feng Shui, I was puzzled, as I had provided them with detailed recommendations months earlier. Wondering if something was out of place, I asked her about their new fish tank. She replied, “Oh, I put the Christmas tree there, and the fish are in the garage for now.” I immediately recommended putting the tank back in its original position according to the consultation’s guidelines. Shortly after restoring the setup, her husband received a better job offer, and they were surprised by an unexpected sum of money from the government.

And so here’s one of my key don’t-put-it-there recommendations for the holidays: never replace an existing fish tank with your Christmas tree! Fish tanks should be carefully positioned in Feng Shui to attract wealth and prosperity. Their placement requires knowledge, precise timing, and careful alignment of the water flow in an auspicious direction. When installed by a trained Feng Shui consultant, they can bring considerable prosperity
