My name is Mitchell Bynert, and I am a professional golf player and instructor from the U.K., based in Marbella, Spain, where I provide in-person coaching to my students.

In today’s segment, and following on from https://www.55pluswellness.com/post/the-warm-up, I would like to share some tips and strategies on how you can prepare your golf swing and overall game for the round ahead.
Now, you may have done the following yourself or seen one of your playing partners fall in to the bad habit of arriving at the golf club with 5-10 minutes to spare before your tee time, only to get off to really bad start during the first couple of holes. The player is in a rush from the moment they leave the house until they hit their first tee shot, resulting in unnecessary stress and a failure to calm the mi before beginning to swing.
With this in mind, here are my top tips on how to prepare yourself for your next round:
- Preparation in advance: if you have a morning tee time, then my advice would be to organise everything you need (golf bag, shoes, drinks, snacks, etc) the night before so it is one less thing to worry about in the morning. In addition, try to wake up at least 2 hours before your tee time providing you enough time to get ready, have a good breakfast, travel to the golf course and allowing time to complete a physical warm-up and to hit some balls on the range.
- Physical Warm-up: as Oli mentioned earlier, completing a physical warm-up and getting your body ready for the game ahead is of the utmost importance. Not only does this help you to activate key muscle groups and blood circulation, it will also help reduce potential injuries out on the course. Finally, it will also help to get you in the right frame of mind before your round.
- Golf Game Warm-up: once your body is warm and ready to go, we can now move into a golf game warm-up consisting of some time on the range, short game area and putting green. But before we do, it’s important to remember that this is not a “practice’ or ‘technical” session - we’re simply making some swings and hitting some shots in preparation for the round ahead. Here are my top 3 tips on how you can warm-up your golf game:
1. Rule of 5 - this method consists of hitting 5 golf balls with each odd or even club. For example:
5 shots with your SW, 9 iron, 7 iron, 5 iron, 3 hybrid, 3 Wood & Driver
5 shots with your PW, 8 iron, 6 iron, 4 iron, Hybrid, 3 Wood & Driver
As a player, completing this swing warm-up allows you to strategically work your way through the bag.

2. Short Game Area (3- balls only): Grab 3 golf balls from your bag along with your 3 wedges, and place them down next to each other on the edge of the short game area. Pick a target/flag and h each golf ball to the same flag, but using each of your wedges for each ball. As we know, there a many ways to chip around the green; by using this technique not only are you working on your short game skills, but you are also warming up your mind and making yourself aware of how the ball is bouncing on green, rolling out towards the hole, and how your touch feels with each club.

3. Putting Warm-Up: Your objective on the putting green warm-up is not to try to get the ball in the hole - on the contrary, it’s to get a feel for the speed of the green on that day. Speed and distance control are pivotal for good putting out on the course, so this is your time to dial in that speed.
