- Rewiring the Brain with RTT
RAPID TRANSFORMATION THERAPY with KATHRYN LINDUP You’re reading a preview of the December/January 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit DJ25 . Hi, I’m Kathryn! Originally from England, I’ve lived in Hong Kong, Germany, and Australia, and for the past three years, I’ve been calling the beautiful Costa Del Sol my home. As a Rapid Transformational Therapist, I help clients unlock their mind’s natural healing potential by addressing the root causes of both physical and mental challenges. I’m passionate about guiding people toward deeper, lasting health transformations! MY OWN PERSONAL REMARKABLE HEALTH BREAKTHROUGH USING RTT TO HEAL ENDOMETRIOSIS For 12 years, I dealt with the debilitating symptoms of endometriosis—severe bloating, digestive issues, chronic fatigue, and pain that kept me bedridden and reliant on prescription painkillers. Hormone treatments initially seemed like a solution, but the intense side effects, including anxiety and depression, led doctors to suggest additional medications to manage these reactions. Having never faced such issues before, I couldn’t accept a lifetime of medications to counteract other medications’ effects. So, despite medical advice, I stopped the treatment. Determined to avoid surgery, I managed my symptoms naturally with diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes for the next five years. I had regular scans to monitor the endometriosis, but after 12 years, I received news of new growth. I knew I had to find another way to avoid going back on to hormones or undergoing invasive surgery. One RTT session, focused on the root cause of the endometriosis, delivered remarkable results. Follow-up scans showed a reduction in growths and overall inflammation, and I now no longer suffered the painful symptoms. After five years on prescription painkillers, I was finally able to come off them entirely - in fact, I experience zero pain through my monthly cycle now! The effectiveness of RTT was so profound that even my consultant was amazed by these results achieved without Western medicine! WHAT IS RTT? RAPID TRANSFORMATIONAL THERAPY is a unique, multi-award winning therapy that was developed by the leading British therapist Marisa Peer. RTT combines the best principles of hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This innovative approach helps individuals identify the root cause of the issue they want to overcome and quickly and effectively see the changes they have longed for. All our beliefs and behaviours are formed through things that are said to us or things that happen to us, and it creates a blueprint in our subconscious mind that our conscious mind and body work to. “Think of it like you are the boat on top of the water and your beliefs and behaviours are lots of anchors sitting below on the sea bed. If you have a physical or mental issue that you want to move away from or change, and you can’t, it’s because these anchors are there stopping you from moving forward.” By helping clients identify the root cause of the issues and reframing them in the client’s mind, I help people pull up those anchors to unleash them from their past to move forward and create their own paradise inside themselves. WHAT THE JOURNEY LOOKS LIKE RTT combines the best elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Hypnotherapy and psychotherapy, to identify and deal with the root cause of your issue. With this approach, you gain a powerful understanding, allowing lasting positive change to take effect and transform your life! Sessions can be conducted online from the comfort of your own home or in person if you prefer but the focus is always the same - to achieve change quickly! The majority of clients only need one session, the maximum anyone would ever need is three. RTT works to address the root cause of issues in a short time so you can move forward confidently. MISCONCEPTIONS ON HYPNOSIS Loss of Control – Clients remain fully aware and in control throughout the session. Like Stage Hypnosis – Hypnotherapy is used for powerful therapeutic effects, not entertainment. Only for “Weak Minds” – Hypnosis is a natural state anyone can access. Mind Control – Hypnotherapists guide, but the client has the power. Limited Use – Hypnotherapy can help with many issues, from anxiety to chronic pain. Memory Loss – Clients remember most of the session; they are relaxed, not asleep. ______________________________________________________________________ WHAT CAN RAPID TRANSFORMATIONAL THERAPY HELP WITH? Because RTT is a complete, solution-based approach, it can be used in many different ways. RTT has achieved phenomenal success in helping people overcome all kinds of challenges, including those listed below: INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE? - The Warm-Up
You’re reading a preview of the December/January 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit DJ25 . Welcome to the first instalment of Off the Tee, with OW Performance Labs and Mitchell Bynert Golf , where we look to share tips and tricks to enhance your ability to play golf. These instalments may seem easy, and they are! Consistency is not only key to gaining a solid golf swing, but utilising these tips and tricks will help many elements of your golf game, such as increasing strength, improving mental health, and decreasing the risk of injury, to name a few. OLI WILLIAMS My name is Oli, of OW Performance Labs. I’m a physical trainer for golf based on the Costa del Sol. My work allows me to coach both amateur and elite-level athletes to reach optimal levels of sporting performance! Today's instalment looks at the importance of the physical warm-up, providing a few movements to help improve your stability & mobility, before striking a ball. As a sport commonly linked to strategy and skill, many individuals forget the high physical requirements in a golf swing. Enabling a golfer to strike a ball with reduced risk of injury, and help separate muscle groups preparing for alternating velocities and forces, a warm-up is of the utmost importance. The demands at the top level of golf have increased substantially over previous years, making it critical for golfers to prepare for every element of the game. A golf warm-up can provide numerous positive effects on the body, such as raising heart rate, a increasing blood flow helping nerve and motor recruitment. Securing a sport-specific warm-up help you prepare for the intense demands of the sport. Recent studies have shown that the use of static (non-movement) stretching before sport can limit the effectiveness of muscle groups used during exercise. Tilley et al. (2012) found improvements in ma areas: speed, accuracy, and distance were enhanced when static stretching was eliminated, using only dynamic (moving) stretches in the warm-up. A study by Coughlan et al (2018) found the use of a dynamic warm-up improved self-reported shot patterns and significant improvements in CHS (Club Head Speeds) using the trackman systems. addition, acute benefits with driver ball velocity were found in ´high-skilled golfers´ aft dynamic/resistance-band warm-ups (Langdown et al, 2019). If you want to increase the amount of time you’re playing golf, give some of the following movements a try—all you need is a golf club! Low to Highs Overhead Squats Standing Torso Rotations Overhead Reverse Lunge with Side Bend Single Leg Torso Rotations Lateral Bounds Utilising a sport-specific warm-up full of dynamic exercises - targeting the muscle groups work during golf - will aid in numerous gains whilst on the course. Add any of these exercises to your warm-up, and see if you can feel the difference OW PERFORMANCE LABS For more information, scan my QR code and get in touch. - Maximise Your Winter Wellness & Thrive Beyond the Season
SHIRLEY O’NEILL BOARD CERTIFIED FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE PRACTITIONER You’re reading a preview of the December/January 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit DJ25 . As this winter approaches, the season’s challenges can impact our health. Shorter days, colder nights and festive indulgences can sometimes leave us feeling less vibrant. However, with a few simple lifestyle modifications and some proactive strategies, winter can become a time to thrive. In this article, we’ll explore how to boost your overall wellness, protect yourself against illness, and embrace the season with energy and vitality. THE IMMUNE SYSTEM: YOUR BODY’S DEFENSE - The immune system is your body’s shield against bacterial and viral infections. However, as we age, the body’s ability to combat illness can decrease, due to factors like chronic stress, lack of physical activity, poor diet and vitamin deficiencies, which can make us more vulnerable to infections. Fortunately, adopting a few simple practices can make a world of difference. SLEEP & STRESS MANAGEMENT - Poor sleep (not enough or interrupted) and chronic stress can suppress immune function and increase blood pressure, making you more susceptible to illness. Lack of rest weakens your body’s defence mechanisms, while elevated or depressed stress hormones may leave you reaching for sugary snacks or alcohol, both of which negatively impact your immunity. Finding ways to manage holiday stress—whether through gentle movement, mindfulness, simply stepping away from the hustle, or taking time to relax before bed with an Epsom salt bath—can make a huge difference in how you feel. NUTRITION FOR IMMUNITY: WHAT YOUR BODY NEEDS - Supporting your immune system with the right nutrients is key to thriving during the winter months. Vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, zinc, copper, vitamin C, and vitamin D are crucial for maintaining health. Many people experience vitamin D insufficiency during winter due to reduced sunlight exposure; however, magnesium is essential for converting vitamin D into its active form, so it is crucial to pair a supplement, such as vitamin D3/K2, with magnesium for optimal absorption and use by the body. When it comes to food, think ‘ all the colours of the rainbow’ . Eating a variety of whole, nutrient-dense foods helps fuel your body optimally. Complex carbohydrates such as sweet potatoes or butternut squash, quality protein with each meal and healthy fats such as olive oil, and coconut oil are excellent choices. Avoid highly processed foods and excessive processed sugar intake, which can compromise your immune system. Instead, reach for in-season fruits and vegetables, swap fruit juice and remember to chew your food thoroughly. STAY ACTIVE & WARM THIS WINTER - Physical activity is a crucial part of maintaining a healthy immune system. Even if you’re spending more time indoors, it’s important to keep moving. Small actions like standing up and sitting down in a chair, marching in place, or even light squats while brushing your teeth can keep your body active and energised. Movement not only helps your physical health but also boosts your mental well-being, especially when the shorter days might affect your mood. Staying warm is equally important. Dress in layers so you can easily regulate your body temperature when moving between indoor and outdoor spaces. If you can, aim for a daily dose of sunlight to top up your vitamin D levels—just 20 minutes of sunlight in the morning can make a difference in how you feel. MENTAL HEALTH & SELF-CARE - Winter’s shorter days and longer nights can lead to lower moods, so it’s important to look after your mental health. Practising self-care by “filling your cup” helps you cope with the winter blues and stay energised throughout the holiday season. Spend time doing things that bring you joy—a walk in nature, a good book, or connecting with family or friends. Embrace Festive Cheer Without Sacrificing Wellness The festive season often brings indulgent food, drinks and late nights. While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying the season's festivities, being mindful of how you treat your body during this time can help you feel your best. Here are a few tips to stay well during the holidays: STAY HYDRATED : Dehydration can sneak up during the colder months, especially if you’re indulging in mulled wine, festive cocktails, or extra coffee or tea. Set yourself up for success by keeping a glass of water by your bedside and drinking it first thing in the morning, before you get out of bed. You might even add a slice of lemon and ginger to some hot water or sip on herbal teas throughout the day. GIVE YOUR DIGESTION A BREAK : The festive season often leads to overeating, but it’s important to listen to your body. Overworking your digestive system can lead to discomfort, so be mindful of portion sizes, and give your body time to rest between meals. No one likes to be overworked at Christmas, don’t force your digestive system to work back-to-back shifts. Your digestive system will thank you! SMALL CHANGES, BIG RESULTS - Winter doesn’t have to be a time when your health takes a back seat. By taking simple steps to improve your lifestyle and nutrient intake, you can support your immune system, increase your energy levels and enhance your overall sense of well-being. Remember, symptoms are not the problem—they are signals that your body is trying to heal itself. By listening to those signals and making mindful choices, you can give your body the tools it needs to restore itself. This holiday season, embrace wellness, stay active and enjoy the festivities while caring for your health. By making small but significant changes, you’ll find that winter can be a time to not just survive—but thrive! - Coping with Loneliness & Family Estrangement: A Christmas Guide for Expats
DR SAM BARCHAM, UK CHARTERED COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGIST You’re reading a preview of the December/January 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit DJ25 . As Christmas approaches, the festive season can evoke a mix of emotions for those living abroad. Relocating abroad often means being physically separated from family and loved ones, which can make the holidays feel especially isolating. Whether due to personal family issues or logistical difficulties, many expats find themselves navigating this emotional landscape alone. A time of year that should bring joy might instead highlight feelings of disconnection or the pain of distant or estranged relationships. However, it is possible to manage these difficult emotions and create a meaningful holiday experience, even when it feels like the world might be celebrating without you. THE GLOBAL LONELINESS EPIDEMIC Loneliness is not unique to those living abroad. It has become a growing issue worldwide, especially among older adults. It is becoming such a significant issue that in 2023, the US surgeon general released an advisory note on the epidemic of loneliness and isolation. One recent survey found that one in four people globally experience loneliness. Additionally, the time spent socialising with friends has drastically declined over the years. In 2003, people spent an average of 60 minutes a day with friends, but by 2020, that number dropped to just 20 minutes. This dramatic reduction underscores the increasing isolation many face, and this can be accentuated during a season that emphasises family and connection. Loneliness, although related, is not the same as social isolation. Loneliness can be described as the painful feeling of isolation or disconnection. It is true that a person can feel lonely even if they live and interact with other people. Likewise, someone can live alone and not feel lonely or isolated. Understanding the effects of loneliness, though, is essential. It is more than just a bad feeling—it harms the individual physically and mentally. Being socially disconnected has been compared to the equivalent of smoking two packs of cigarettes a day in terms of the impact on health. In the case of older expats, loneliness can be compounded by the fact that they are often disconnected from their families, communities, and long-standing social networks. Moving to a new country may have provided opportunities for adventure or a fresh start, but it can also lead to the loss of close-knit support systems that were once relied on to feel seen, loved, and valued. THE IMPACT OF FAMILY ESTRANGEMENT For some, the feelings of loneliness during the holidays are further intensified by family estrangement. Whether due to unresolved conflicts, differing values, or the complexities of modern life, family estrangement can be particularly painful during Christmas, a holiday rooted in the ideas of family unity and togetherness. The gap between cultural expectations of holiday joy and the reality of family conflict can lead to feelings of guilt, regret, or sadness. It’s important to understand that family estrangement, while difficult, is actually more common than many realise. You can find specialist support groups and communities that can be accessed online, which can be a source of support when going through something as difficult as family estrangement. Often, it helps to speak to a therapist who has specialist knowledge and experience in working with estrangement. Even with these challenges, there are ways to find meaning and comfort during the holiday season. EMBRACING NEW WAYS TO CONNECT The antidote to loneliness is connection, whether with family, friends, or the community around you. While living abroad may make it difficult to maintain regular face-to-face contact with loved ones, it doesn’t mean you have to navigate the holidays alone. Building close friendships is one way to fill the void left by estranged or distant family members. This could include fellow expats, local neighbours, or members of the community who understand the unique challenges of living far from home. Join local groups—whether it’s an exercise class, a book club, or volunteering—can help you establish new connections and can be a powerful way to combat feelings of isolation. Involvement in local community activities not only fosters a sense of belonging, but it can also give you a renewed sense of purpose during the holiday season and beyond. While social media has its downsides, it can be a helpful tool for reconnecting with old friends and distant family members. A simple message or video call can go a long way in reducing feelings of isolation. For expats who may be estranged from family, consider reaching out to long-distance friends or acquaintances who may also be feeling lonely this time of year. Even brief interactions can provide emotional support and remind you that you’re not alone in your experience. If direct communication with family is not an option due to estrangement, small gestures like sending a holiday card or message can provide a sense of closure or peace. Whether or not the gesture is reciprocated, it allows you to express goodwill and move forward on your terms. RESILIENCE IN THE FACE OF LONELINESS Living abroad as an older adult presents unique challenges, but it also offers opportunities for growth and resilience. Loneliness, if not addressed, can lead to chronic diseases, depression, and a range of other health issues. That’s why it’s crucial to proactively build resilience to help cope with these feelings, particularly during emotionally charged times like Christmas. First, it’s important to acknowledge your emotions. Loneliness and family estrangement are difficult experiences, but suppressing these feelings often intensifies them. By acknowledging and accepting these emotions with kindness and compassion, you can take positive steps to improve your mental and emotional well-being. Next, prioritise self-care. During the festive season, this might mean setting aside time for activities that bring you joy—whether it’s cooking a special meal, taking a long walk along the beach or attending a local holiday event. Acts of kindness, such as volunteering at a charity or helping a neighbour, can also really boost your mood and provide a sense of connection. For those who practice a faith, attending local Christmas services or gatherings can offer spiritual comfort and foster a sense of community. Many countries have expatriate churches or English-speaking services, providing a cultural touchpoint during the holidays. CREATING YOUR OWN TRADITIONS While loneliness and estrangement are real and painful experiences for many older expats during Christmas, they don’t have to define the holiday season. By acknowledging these emotions, seeking community, and embracing new traditions, it’s possible to create a Christmas that feels fulfilling, even in a foreign country, when family is far away, or relationships are strained.. The holidays can be a time of reflection, personal growth, and connection—even if that connection comes from unexpected places. - The Joy of Giving: How Volunteering Can Make Your Holidays Brighter
STEVE MARSHALL, AGE CONCERN You’re reading a preview of the December/January 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit DJ25 . At AGE CONCERN MARBELLA - SAN PEDRO we want to make sure that you get as much out of Volunteering as you put into it. That's why we work very hard to match your aims, goals, aspirations and available time to the opportunities we have. Every one of our volunteers brings a wealth of different experiences for the benefit of others. Whatever your background, your talents are valued. Because all our Volunteers are the very lifeblood of Age Concern, we won’t pigeon-hole you and your talents. All our volunteers are valued team members who have the opportunity to forward suggestions at our regular meetings. It's very simple: without you, we would cease to exist Volunteering has many benefits. It's not only good for our clients and the wider community, it can also improve your physical and mental health and well-being: ● Sometimes our life changes can leave us a little isolated. Whatever the reason, Volunteering reconnects us with our community and helps create new friendships. ● Most of us have benefited from the help others have given us in our lives, at one time or another. No doubt you remember how grateful you felt, and would now like to give something back to another person in need. AGE CONCERN can help YOU achieve that goal. ● The most important thing about Volunteering is that you should ENJOY it on your own terms and that it's a rewarding experience for both you and the people you help. It will soon be Christmas and the same old worries come back to haunt us. What should I get? Will they like it? Will all the effort I put into choosing a suitable and well-thought-out present be for nothing? Or worse still, will my present end up being re-gifted? But when you make the decision to volunteer, none of that matters because you are giving the greatest gift you can to someone. You are sharing your TIME. At AGE CONCERN MARBELLA - SAN PEDRO many of our clients have to live with the unwanted “twins”. These two are known as Loneliness and Isolation. When we get to a “certain age” many of our friends and family will either have either moved away - or passed away - giving the unwanted twins easy access to do their worst. If you ask your older neighbours what is the most important thing they could be given - it’s COMPANIONSHIP. The joy of sharing some time with another person who may not see any visitors for days, or even weeks, is immeasurable. A cup of tea and a chat or maybe going with someone to their hospital appointment ( which can be a little scary ) will make a REAL difference. It gives you both a unique connection which often ends up becoming a meaningful friendship. COMPANIONSHIP and a little of your spare TIME are a precious gift at Christmastime or indeed any time of year. ABOUT AGE CONCERN AGE CONCERN MARBELLA - SAN PEDRO provides FREE welfare advice, help, support and friendship from their Community Centre in San Pedro, where they provide a range of social activities. This Christmas AGE CONCERN MARBELLA - SAN PEDRO have launched their 10 Euro a Month Appeal If you can spare just 10 euros a month, this small amount can make an enormous difference to our work. - From Diagnosis to Discovery: Finding a New Purpose Through Padel
JOHN MILNES SHARES HIS PROSTATE CANCER SURVIVAL JOURNEY WITH 55+ WELLNESS You’re reading a preview of the December/January 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit DJ25 . Prostate cancer is a significant health concern for men over 55, with cases rising due to an ageing population, longer life expectancy, and improved diagnostics. In Spain, the ever-expanding “silver” or "longevity" market underscores the importance of increased awareness and accessible screening. The most common screening method is the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test, which measures the level of PSA in the blood. While prostate cancer screening isn’t mandatory, it’s recommended for men over 50, especially those with a family history. High levels of PSA can indicate prostate cancer, but may also result from other prostate conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostatitis. A CHANCE ENCOUNTER THAT SAVED MY LIFE The path to discovering a serious health condition often begins with the smallest of moments. For John, it was an unexpected reunion with an old family friend that potentially saved his life. "It was pure chance, really," he recalls, settling into his chair as he shares his story. "I bumped into a friend, someone I hadn't seen in many years. She told me about her husband's prostate cancer diagnosis and insisted that my brother and I should get PSA tests done." Like many men, John had no symptoms and might never have considered getting tested. "It wouldn't have crossed my mind," he admits. Though he initially left the suggestion on the "back burner," he acted on it during a routine doctor's visit about six months later. What followed, was a journey that would highlight both the importance of prostate cancer screening and the need for patience—and sometimes persistence—with the medical system. His initial PSA test returned a reading of 9, a number that John now knows should have raised more immediate concerns. "When the doctor said it was 'slightly high,' I look back now and think that was quite an understatement," he reflects. The standard protocol followed: a second test four weeks later showed a marginal decrease to just over 8, prompting a wait-and-see approach and a third test four weeks after that. "That's a 12-week delay just to get on the radar," John notes, with the wisdom of hindsight. Regarding PSA levels: - A PSA level below 4 ng/mL is generally considered low, though men with levels under 4 can still have prostate cancer. - Levels between 4 and 10 ng/mL are often classified as "borderline," with around a 25% chance of prostate cancer. - PSA levels above 10 ng/mL significantly increase the likelihood of prostate cancer, with a greater than 50% risk. NAVIGATING THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM The journey from initial testing to diagnosis followed a methodical if somewhat prolonged path. After the series of PSA tests, John underwent a scan that revealed some abnormalities, leading to the crucial next step: a biopsy. "The biopsy is the only thing that conclusively tells them if you've got prostate cancer," he explains. "The PSA test is just an indicator." The biopsy process, while thorough, involves taking multiple samples from different areas of the prostate to ensure accuracy. For John, this definitive test came in May, several months after his initial PSA test in January. By August, he had undergone surgery to remove his prostate. "Looking back at the timeline," he reflects, "from that first doctor's visit in January to having the prostate removed in August—that's a significant journey." When asked what advice he'd give others in a similar situation today, his response is immediate and emphatic: "I would insist on being referred to the hospital right away. Don't let yourself be put off." FACING THE DIAGNOSIS Like many patients in the digital age, John turned to the internet for information— "I would urge everyone not to Google symptoms and such, because everyone's different. What you read might apply to somebody, but not the next person. Get the facts from your doctors, surgeons, and established support organisations instead." (S ee the end of this article for information on support services available in Spain.) THE EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER Initially, John's outlook was optimistic. "Because it hadn't spread, I thought once it was taken out, everything would be rosy again," he shares. This initial optimism seemed justified when his first few post-surgery PSA tests came back clear. "I was upbeat. I thought I'd beaten this." However, a subsequent PSA test revealed an unexpected turn: the cancer hadn't completely gone. "That's when it all changed for me psychologically," John reflects. What followed was another challenging period of waiting and monitoring—three months of regular PSA tests to confirm the trend. Though the numbers were much lower than pre-surgery (about a hundredth of the original readings), they were slowly rising. "I had moments or days of sitting in rooms just crying," he admits, sharing the emotional toll of the uncertainty. Yet, physically, he experienced few symptoms beyond the expected effects of surgery. "I never felt physically damaged," he notes. "I was still fit and well." The word "cancer" itself became a source of anxiety. "I just don't like the word that starts with C," John admits. "It frightens the living daylights out of me." This fear, combined with others' attempts at reassurance, initially led him to withdraw. "I didn't really want to talk about it very much." Yet here he is, sharing his story: "I'm happy to talk about it if it helps one person." STAYING ACTIVE THROUGH TREATMENT As radiotherapy treatment approached, John made a conscious decision to prioritize his fitness. "The list of side effects from radiotherapy is enormous," he explains. "I wasn’t symptomatic, or feeling unwell in myself, so to give myself the best chance I worked really hard on my fitness before treatment started." This wasn't doctor's orders—it was his own initiative to take control where he could. In what would prove to be a pivotal decision, John took up padel tennis. "A friend I've known for probably 30 years suggested I try this new sport at Winchester Club, in the UK" he explains. Initially, he was hesitant—characteristic of his previous approach to new situations. "In the old days, if I had to go to a social event, I just couldn't cope with meeting new people. I'm really proud of myself that I can talk about this now," he reflects. "There's just no way I would have done this before." Padel tennis became not just exercise, but therapy. "It was massive in that it just took my mind away from it," John says. "I was probably playing virtually every day, really pushing myself—probably too much. But I just thought, 'I might not be able to play padel again.' I had no idea what side effects I might suffer from, so I gave it everything." THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF PADEL What began as simply a means of getting stronger during treatment has evolved into something far more meaningful for John. "It means the world to me, actually," he explains, "because I think it's such an amazing sport for anyone of any age to play." The accessibility of padel tennis sets it apart from other racket sports. "Being able to have a game probably virtually straight away is amazing," John enthuses. "If you look at tennis or squash, they're very difficult games to pick up." The unique design of a padel court - smaller than a tennis court and enclosed by glass walls - makes it more approachable and enjoyable for beginners. A GAME FOR EVERYONE The physical layout of the court creates a more forgiving game. "When balls come past you in tennis, that's the end of it. But on a padel court, you've got glass all the way around," John explains. "If the ball bounces, it can hit the glass, and as long as it's bouncing back to somewhere you can get it, you're still in the game." These rules make the walls an integral part of the strategy: "The wall is part of the game. A massive part of the game." "You don't even have to be any good," John emphasizes. "You've got the physical side of it, which is fantastic. You've got the social side, which is fantastic. Everyone I talk to, people that have tried it are hooked." RADIOTHERAPY: THE SILENT ROOM The radiotherapy department, meanwhile, presented John with a new and challenging reality. Despite being physically fit, often arriving in his sports gear ready for his next game, he found himself struggling emotionally. "I really struggled the first few goes up there," he admits. "Lots of meltdowns." The treatment room had its own peculiar rhythm. Patients would arrive, find a chair, and drink the required amounts of water—everyone following the same careful protocol. Yet despite sharing this intimate space and experience, "everyone generally just sat in silence." It was a poignant illustration of how men, particularly, often struggle to discuss health concerns and emotional experiences. BREAKING THROUGH THE SILENCE After experiencing an emotional breakdown at the therapy centre, John was offered therapy sessions. "I had eight sessions to run alongside the seven weeks of treatment," he explains. "It was just lovely to have someone to talk to outside of family or friends." The support came through a local cancer charity operating within the hospital—a crucial lifeline during this challenging period. Ironically, it wasn't until his final week of treatment that meaningful conversations began to emerge among the patients. "Everyone kind of knows what everyone's doing, because you've got to go to the loo. You can't be too full. You can't be too empty." Yet despite sharing this intimate space and experience, "everyone generally just sat in silence." "People would commonly ask 'how many days have you got left?'" he recalls. "You start chatting only at that point, which is quite bizarre really, because it's kind of too late to truly connect." Nonetheless, these late-breaking conversations revealed the profound struggles some of his fellow patients were experiencing. Two men in particular opened up about having thoughts about taking their lives—revelations that prompted John to alert the nursing staff, ensuring they received the mental health support they desperately needed. While John had been helping others by alerting staff to his fellow patients' mental health struggles, he too was fighting his own battles. With remarkable candour, he acknowledges having had suicidal thoughts himself—a testament to the profound psychological impact of cancer diagnosis and treatment. Support fortunately came through multiple channels: his doctor, the Arc cancer charity's counselling services, and various specialist healthcare professionals. The end of radiotherapy, however, brought its own challenges. "Suddenly I had nothing," John recalls of his last treatment day. "That didn't work for me at all." While further therapy sessions were arranged, the prospect of them ending creates anxiety, highlighting the ongoing nature of emotional recovery. "It's a journey," John notes. "It's never really a closed book." FINDING NEW STRENGTH Perhaps surprisingly, this challenging journey has led to unexpected positive changes. "To put a positive spin on what I've been through," John reflects, "I'm more outgoing, I've met some lovely people, and I'm just trying to get on with it, really." His commitment to padel and fitness has become a cornerstone of his recovery. "I find it a massive boost for my mental health," he says. "I can look in the mirror now at my age, and I look the best I've ever looked." This physical transformation mirrors a deeper personal evolution. The changes extend far beyond the physical. "I wouldn't have come out to Spain in March this year," he says, referring to a trip with fellow padel players. "I wouldn't have spoken to you, or to the other guys at the gym. There are just so many people I met, just chatting, and everyone's got their own story. It's lovely to hear people's life stories, to be honest." Despite this positive transformation, John remains realistic about the challenges. "You can't let it get on top of you, although it does sometimes," he admits. He's particularly conscious that not everyone has the same opportunities or resources. "It's terrible for people that literally can't do anything for themselves. You'll probably find they resign to their situation a lot more rather than fighting it." Looking ahead, John sees value in sharing his experience. "If there can just be any signposting in this so that people at least have somewhere to look, or people to call," he reflects, aware that many people living well today might be unprepared for unexpected health challenges. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE As 2024 draws to a close, John's plans for 2025 revolve around the sport that has given him so much. "I want to keep getting physically stronger to counterbalance the drugs," he shares. "My plan is to come out to Spain, complete a padel coaching course, and to spend part of my life in Spain and some of it back in the UK." Already, he's giving back through the sport. "I volunteer down at Winchester to coach some disadvantaged kids," he explains. "They can't afford coaching so I do it for nothing. I'm not in it for money." He sees the potential impact, particularly for young people: "There's so much going on and England's so difficult right now, like the trouble they could be getting into. To give them that distraction and the social experience of padel - in the same way that it's distracted me and made me stronger and more connected with people.” "I'm really lucky that I've had sport my whole life," John reflects. "It keeps you in a better place. I also can’t thank my friends, family, and the new people I've met along the way, enough. Their support has been incredible, and it’s given me the strength to keep pushing forward and find joy in each day." This interview took place just as six-time Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy revealed his prostate cancer diagnosis is terminal, at just 47 years old. The cycling legend has called for mandatory prostate cancer testing in the UK; highlighting how this disease can affect men of any age or fitness level, and emphasising the critical importance of early detection. While Hoy revealed his cancer had already spread before his diagnosis, John's chance encounter while he was symptom-free led to an earlier intervention, underlining the potentially life-saving value of timely testing. - Stay Merry, Not Weary - Managing the Physical Demands of the Festive Season
SARAH MONAGHAN, COSTA HEALTH You’re reading a preview of the December/January 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit DJ25 . As the festive season approaches, many of us find ourselves lifting heavy decorations, cooking elaborate meals, and sitting for hours at gatherings. These enjoyable yet demanding activities can take a toll on our bodies. Staying mobile and pain-free is key to enjoying the festivities to the fullest. Here are some practical tips to help you stay active, healthy, and comfortable this Christmas. MIND YOUR POSTURE DURING FESTIVITIES Poor posture can lead to discomfort, whether sitting down for a long Christmas dinner or enjoying time in front of the television. Slouching puts extra strain on your back and neck, leading to pain or stiffness. • Sit with your back straight, shoulders relaxed, and feet flat on the floor. • Use a cushion or towel at the small of your back to support your spine’s natural curve. • Stretch or stand every 30 minutes to keep joints and muscles loose. LIFT AND CARRY ITEMS SAFELY From holiday decorations to heavy grocery bags, lifting is common during the festive season. Avoid back pain or injury by using the proper technique: • Bend your knees and hips, not your back, when lifting. • Hold items close to your body to engage your core and reduce strain. • Avoid twisting your body when carrying items. KEEP MOVING WITH GENTLE EXERCISE Winter can make us less active, but regular movement is essential for joint health, muscle strength, and balance. Gentle activities keep stiffness and discomfort at bay: • Walking: A short daily walk boosts circulation, strengthens muscles, and ‘ improves mood. • Stretching: Simple stretches help maintain flexibility. Focus on the lower back, hamstrings, and shoulders, as these areas often tighten with age and inactivity. • Gentle yoga or tai chi: These combine movement with mindful breathing, improving flexibility and balance. They can be done indoors, making them ideal for colder months. PREVENT OVERUSE AND JOINT PAIN Tasks like standing for long periods while cooking or wrapping gifts can lead to overuse of muscles and joints, causing discomfort in areas like the back, neck, and knees. • Alternate activities: Switch between sitting and standing tasks to give muscles a break. If standing for long periods, shift your weight between your legs to avoid putting pressure on one side. • Wear supportive footwear: When standing or walking for long periods, wear shoes that provide cushioning for your feet and reduce impact on your joints. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY It’s tempting to push through the festive rush, especially with family around, but listening to your body is crucial. Pain, stiffness, or discomfort are signs of slowing down. Ignoring these signs can lead to bigger issues. • Rest when needed: Take breaks if you feel sore or fatigued. Rest helps muscles recover and lowers the chance of injury. • Stay hydrated: Even in colder months, staying hydrated helps joint lubrication and muscle function. Water also keeps your energy levels steady. STAY MINDFUL OF STRESS AND MENTAL WELL-BEING The festive season can be stressful, which can also affect physical health. Stress often causes muscle tension, particularly in the neck and shoulders. • Practice relaxation techniques: Breathing exercises, meditation, or a few quiet moments can reduce stress and muscle tension. • Stay connected: Spend time with family or friends in person or virtually. Laughter and good conversation are essential for mental well-being and can lift your mood during the season. STAY MERRY AND MOVE WELL Maintaining physical health during the festive season doesn’t have to be complicated. Mindful posture, lifting techniques, and regular gentle movement can prevent pain and allow you to enjoy a comfortable, active Christmas. Simple adjustments to your routine can make a big difference, helping you celebrate the season with comfort and joy. - Caramelised Pear, Lentil and Quinoa Salad
AMANDA GEDEON, LA FABRIQUITA You’re reading a preview of the December/January 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit DJ25 . When thinking of Christmas, or any holiday really, our indulgent minds can often take us on a gastronomic trip, revisiting exquisite moments shared with loved ones. These moments can often bring up determined reminders that, this year, we'll restrain ourselves a little more. This year, we won't have seconds. This year, we'll just have one mince pie. This year, we'll avoid those glistening supermarket aisles promoting traditional local products such as 'turron' and 'polvorones,' which we just HAVE TO HAVE, as it'd be rude not to celebrate cultural differences. What you don't ever think is: 'This year, we'll have salad.' Of course not. Why would you? Well, there are salads, and then there are Salads … and, this year, we're going to show you how to turn a distant thought into a centrepiece. The beauty of this salad is not only that it looks fantastic, but it also tastes incredibly good. Don't have pears? Use apples. Don't have coconut syrup? Use agave or honey. Don't have rocket? Use baby leaf spinach. No pecans? Walnuts work great. Don't like quinoa? Brown rice or any other grain subs perfectly. You get the idea... The combination of quinoa (or any grain) and lentils brings you a full amino acid profile with generous amounts of bioavailable plant protein . Nuts bring in the healthy fats , whilst pears and cherry tomatoes load you up with vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants (among other things). Leafy greens are nutrient powerhouses which, by the way, should really be finding their way into every meal... ;) Caramelised Pear, Lentil and Quinoa Salad (serves 4 as a side) 2 ripe pears, quartered, cores removed 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp coconut syrup 100g puy lentils, raw OR 250g precooked lentils 100g uncooked quinoa, rinsed OR 300g precooked quinoa 2 vines of cherry tomatoes 50g pecans 4 spring onions, thinly sliced Juice of one lemon 150g rocket or baby leaf spinach Preheat oven to 180C 1. Mix the olive oil, balsamic vinegar and coconut syrup and add to a shallow pan. Add pear quarters and gently simmer for approximately 30 minutes, half covered. Check frequently to ensure the pan doesn't dry out, adding a splash of water if necessary and flipping pears halfway. 2. If using uncooked lentils, place them in another pan after rinsing, cover them with plenty of water, bring to the boil and simmer for 18 to 20 minutes. Drain and set aside. 3. If using uncooked quinoa, place rinsed quinoa in another pan with 200ml of water (add a quarter of veggie stock cube if you fancy). Cover, bring to the boil, reduce heat and cook until all liquid has been absorbed (between 12 and 15 minutes). Allow to cool slightly. 4. Place cherry tomatoes (still on their vine) on a baking tray with half a teaspoon of olive oil. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, until they start to wrinkle and nicely roast. 5. On a separate baking dish, add pecans and gently roast for 7 minutes. Set aside, allow to cool slightly and break into pieces (not too small). Time to bring everything together: In a bowl mix together the pecans, spring onions, lentils, quinoa and lemon juice. Feel free to add some sliced chilli here if you like things spicy. Place your choice of leafy greens on a serving dish, and then pile on the lentil mixture. Drizzle with as much (or as little) extra virgin olive oil as you like, before placing the pears and roasted cherry tomatoes on top. Happy cooking! ABOUT LA FABRIQUITA Don't like cooking? - Be Fabulous At Any Age
STYLIST ANNE RYAN OFFERS ADVICE ON FASHION FOR WOMEN OVER 55 You’re reading a preview of the December/January 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit DJ25 . Fashion is a powerful tool that allows you to express who you are, no matter your age. However, even with the best intentions, certain style choices can unintentionally make you look older than you feel. For women over 55, it’s crucial to focus on embracing your individuality and showcasing your personality through fashion, rather than feeling limited by outdated rule DRESS FOR YOUR SHAPE Looking and feeling fabulous at any age starts with being comfortable in your own skin, and that begins with dressing for your body shape. Instead of hiding behind baggy or ill-fitting clothes, opt for pieces that highlight your best features and make you feel confident. When you learn how to dress for your specific body type, building a wardrobe that enhances your natural shape becomes easy and enjoyable. UNDERSTANDING YOUR BODY TYPE The best way to determine your body shape is to stand in front of a mirror wearing form-fitting clothing and take note of your widest and narrowest areas. You can also take measurements of your shoulders, bust, waist, and hips. There are several body shapes, including Inverted Triangle, Pear, Apple, and Hourglass, but we'll focus on two popular types: Inverted Triangle and Hourglass. INVERTED TRIANGLE BODY SHAPE If your upper body is broader than your lower body, you may have an Inverted Triangle shape. Typically, the waist is not well-defined, and your shoulders or bust are your widest points. The goal for this body shape is to balance the proportions by drawing attention to the lower half. WHAT TO WEAR: ● Tops: Opt for tops in darker shades than your bottoms. Look for V-necks, U-necks, sweetheart, or scoop necklines to create balance. Avoid high necklines and puffy sleeves that can add bulk to your upper body. ● Accessories: Belts are your best friend, particularly wide belts that sit at your hips, drawing attention to your lower half. ● Dresses: Choose styles that are fitted around the bust and shoulders but have a defined waist, like wrap or belted dresses. Avoid maxi dresses, which can overwhelm your narrow hips. ● Bottoms: Go for low-rise trousers to elongate the torso, and opt for flared, straight, or wide-leg pants to balance your shape. Full, flared skirts are also a great choice. HOURGLASS BODY SHAPE Women with an Hourglass shape have a well-proportioned figure, with a wide bust and hips, and a narrow waist. Celebrities like Sofia Vergara and Christina Hendricks are famous for their hourglass shapes, and they embrace styles that emphasise their curves. WHAT TO WEAR: ● Tops: Fitted or belted tops are ideal for showing off your waist. Open necklines like V-necks or scoops will flatter your bust while highlighting your waist. ● Pants: Boot-cut, flare, and wide-leg trousers are excellent choices to balance your curves and accentuate your hips. ● Skirts: Pencil skirts and A-line skirts that cinch at the waist will emphasize your hourglass figure beautifully. WHAT TO AVOID: ● Straight, boxy shapes that hide your waist should be avoided unless paired with a belt. Additionally, avoid cropped pants or sleeves that hit at the widest part of your body, and steer clear of clothing that ends at your hips, as it can add unwanted width. FASHION TIPS FOR EVERY SHAPE If you’re self-conscious about certain areas, like your arms or midsection, don’t worry—there are plenty of options to make you feel both comfortable and chic. For the arms, sleeves that hit just below the elbow are flattering and provide the right amount of coverage. For the midsection, wrap tops or peplum blouses are excellent choices, offering a flattering fit around the stomach, while drawing attention to your waist. EMBRACE FASHION AT ANY AGE The bottom line is that fashion should be fun and liberating. At 55 and beyond, there’s no reason to shy away from trends, colours, or bold statements. Take control of your style by wearing what makes you feel fabulous. You deserve to feel empowered, stylish, and confident at any age. The best accessory is always your self-confidence—so embrace it! We hope these fashion tips have inspired you to embrace your unique style and feel fabulous at any age. Do you have a go-to style tip or favourite outfit that makes you feel confident? Have these suggestions helped you rethink your wardrobe? Feel free to share your feedback and ideas—we’re excited to continue the conversation and learn from each other’s style journeys! For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit DJ25 . Here’s a breakdown of how the powerful planetary influences we’ve explored are likely to shape the year ahead for each sign: SUNSIGN & THE SIGN IN THE ASCENDANT Aries This may be the most important year of your life Aries. Buckle up and Trust the Universe. With Saturn and Neptune joining forces in your sign, Aries, 2025 is a year of substantial personal and professional reinvention. Saturn asks you to take responsibility for your vision, while Neptune pushes you toward compassionate action and dreams that serve the greater good. The ongoing Jupiter-Saturn square may intensify your desire to build something sustainable while balancing optimism with caution. Ground your dreams in practical steps, as this period offers the potential to redefine your identity and role in the world profoundly. Taurus This might be a challenging year Taurus, since you will have to make some important changes, and that’s difficult for you. With Saturn and Neptune conjunct in your twelfth house of endings and inner work, you’re called to confront old patterns and prepare for a spiritual rebirth. Scorpio In your extraordinary quest for understanding the human mind and what makes us act the way we do, your ruler Pluto, will challenge you to let go of family and culture ways of thinking to discover your true self and desires. Set up routines that support your highest ideals while remaining adaptable to shifting circumstances. Sagittarius This is a truly challenging period of your life, but remember that the friction that Saturn brings into our lives help us get to the gold. Saturn and Neptune’s conjunction in your foundational fourth house could inspire a move, a family realignment, or deeper connection to your roots. Ground yourself in a solid foundation, whether it’s a physical home or a new approach to inner stability, as this is a period of personal renewal. Júpiter in Cancer from June, will bring the opportunities you have been waiting for, Saturn in Aries will keep your feet on the ground even more. Aquarius You are for a transformational journey like never before for the next 19 years. Finally what you were dreaming of consciously or unconsciously is here for you to grasp. There might be some challenges on the way, but you will surprise yourself greatly. The Jupiter-Saturn square affects communication and travel, pushing you to clarify how you express yourself and approach learning. Saturn and Neptune’s conjunction in Aries encourages you to blend intellect with empathy, grounding your ideas in real-world impact. Explore new forms of knowledge or community connections that allow you to express your idealism in a way that’s both creative and purposeful. Pisces This 2025 might be one of the most remarkable years all your life, with new windows of opportunity coming your way. And in spite of the Jupiter-Saturn square highlighting your financial goals, urging careful management of resources and future planning which is not that easy for you, the Saturn and Neptune’s conjunction in Aries in your financial house offers the opportunity to redefine your relationship with material security and values. Build a stable financial foundation that aligns with your ideals and allows for sustainable growth and creativity. Being in touch with the more materialistic side of life, doesn’t mean to be less spiritual or compassionate. ABOUT CRISTINA LAIRD Astrology has been a lifelong calling for me, something I’ve felt deeply connected to for as long as I can remember. At 28, I decided to study it seriously and moved to London, where I joined Liz Greene’s Centre for Psychological Astrology (CPA), alongside incredible minds like Howard Sasportas, Nick Campion, and Robert Hand. Here, I found my calling, and eventually I began to explore the intersections of astrology and psychology more deeply in my practice. This realization led me to train intensively in psychotherapy, psychodrama, and psychodance over the next 15 years, eventually adding shamanism to my path which, of course, transformed my approach to the practice of astrology forever. - Astrological Panorama for 2025: A Year of Catalytic Change and Collective Vision
CRISTINA LAIRD You’re reading a preview of the December/January 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit DJ25 . We are on the brink of an era marked by courage, adaptability, and innovation. Each sign of the Zodiac has its role to play. As we navigate this cosmic landscape together this year, we will understand the meaning of this very profoundly. 2025 offers an invitation to participate actively in shaping a future that honours our highest aspirations while remaining grounded in shared responsibility. The combination of expansive dreams with structured plans will define this year as one of catalytic growth, encouraging us to build a world that reflects both idealism and enduring value. One of the great benefits of understanding Astrology is that it brings to our conscience the fact that we live in a Solar System with constant planetary cycles. These planetary cycles, like the most obvious one between the Sun and the Moon, can be seen as part of the "cosmic net" that weaves through all of existence, shaping and synchronising the rhythms of life, collective growth, and personal evolution. Much like threads in a woven fabric, planetary movements create patterns and cycles that repeat and interlock over time, influencing both outer events and inner experiences. These cycles serve as markers of time and transformation, guiding us through phases of initiation, growth, challenge, and renewal. The year 2025 heralds a transformative period marked by a blend of tension and visionary possibility, as a few significant planetary aspects converge: the ongoing Jupiter-Saturn square (active until June 2025) and the historic Saturn-Neptune conjunction, added to the fact that Pluto - for the first time in the lives of everyone alive today - will travel through Aquarius, something it hasn’t done since 1778. These transits offer challenges and profound opportunities for growth, on both a societal and individual level, suggesting that we are in the midst of an era of radical change and reimagining of collective values. The Jupiter-Saturn square continues to push society to grapple with the balance between optimism and realism, expansion and limitation. This aspect is one of re-evaluation, pushing each of us to seek sustainable growth within the confines of reality. Throughout 2025, this square serves as a reminder that while we may be tempted to pursue progress and growth, doing so without grounding or balance or a plan, will only lead to setbacks. One interesting note is that Kamala Harris and Donald Trump both have this square angle in their birth charts, and have become the voices of this discord and division we all experience, no matter which country we live in. Adding intensity to this backdrop, the Saturn-Neptune conjunction occurs in Aries for the first time since 1703. This alignment signals the beginning of a new cycle; blending the structural and disciplined energy of Saturn with the dissolving, idealistic nature of Neptune. In Aries, a sign of courage, new beginnings, and self-assertion, this conjunction emphasises pioneering visions, collective courage, and a readiness to break from past patterns. This alignment offers an opportunity for healing through action, making 2025 a year of both visionary new starts and practical applications of ideals. This is a true beginning of the Hero’s journey. “Pluto's journey through Aquarius from 2025 until 2044 marks a profound and transformative era” Pluto's journey through Aquarius from 2025 until 2044 marks a profound and transformative era - one that will challenge and reshape society, technology, and collective identity in unprecedented ways. Aquarius, as a sign, represents innovation, humanitarian ideals, community, and the unconventional, while Pluto symbolises deep transformation, power dynamics, and the uncovering of hidden forces. This transit is set to impact our world on a collective level, bringing long-term shifts in how we approach technology, social structures, and our sense of interconnectedness, as well as the vision of life on Earth like never before. Aquarius is about multicultural communities, networking, and cooperation. At a personal level, it will definitely transform the lives of all those with planets in Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and especially Aquarius, but also Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aries—just as it did for Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn over the past 16 years during its journey through Capricorn since 2008.
