DR DARINA ŠANŠAŠVILI You’re reading a preview of the March/April 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit   MA25 DR. DARINA: A LEADER IN AESTHETIC AND FUNCTIONAL DENTISTRY Dr. Darina’s approach to aesthetic care comes from a solid foundation of both scientific knowledge and practical experience. After graduating from the prestigious First Faculty of Medicine at Charles University in Prague, one of the most respected medical institutions in Europe, Dr. Darina has spent over 15 years mastering various aspects of aesthetic dentistry, oral surgery, implantology, and facial aesthetics. At the heart of Dr. Darina’s philosophy is a multi-disciplinary approach that blends scientific expertise with aesthetic precision. This allows her to not only offer cosmetic enhancements, such as wrinkle reduction or lifting, but also effectively treat complex dentofacial disorders—delivering both rejuvenation and relief. Today, Dr. Darina offers specialised training programs worldwide, including at Marbella’s renowned Academy of Aesthetic Medicine. In her own clinic, she delivers a wide range of advanced, non-invasive procedures. Men and women alike turn to her expertise to achieve a refined, elegant appearance and smile. S-THETICS BEAUTY: SCIENCE MEETS ART FOR COMPREHENSIVE FACIAL REJUVENATION Dr. Darina’s non-surgical beauty therapies are backed by the latest scientific advancements in non-invasive aesthetic medicine, ensuring results that are both effective and safe. Her expertly curated treatments are designed to redefine the jawline, lift sagging skin, correct asymmetry, enhance skin texture, smooth wrinkles, restore lost volume, and relieve muscle tension—the objective always being to create a naturally radiant and balanced look that’s in harmony with each person’s individual anatomy. Sagging or tension in the lower face can also occur following surgical facelifts, often leading to dissatisfaction with the results. Dr. Darina addresses this directly by targeting and relaxing the overactive depressor muscles that exacerbate these issues in the first place. The result? A more defined, lifted contour and a naturally refreshed, rejuvenated look without the need for more invasive surgery. From Dr. Darina: AESTHETIC & DENTAL REJUVENATION FOR PATIENTS IN THEIR LATER YEARS Ageing is a natural process but, with modern aesthetic and dental advancements, we can enhance natural beauty while maintaining skin health and facial harmony. Especially after 40, both men and women experience a decline in collagen production, leading to volume loss, skin laxity, and fine lines. Due to hormonal changes, women often notice these effects more prominently, making targeted treatments particularly beneficial. As a medical professional, my approach is to provide personalised, minimally invasive solutions that respect each patient’s unique anatomy and ageing process. Whether you are looking to prevent signs of ageing or maintain results after a surgical facelift, the right combination of treatments can achieve natural, long-lasting rejuvenation. Some of the most effective minimally invasive treatments I recommend include: - DERMAL FILLERS – Restore lost volume in the cheeks, jawline, and lips, subtly lifting and defining facial contours for a naturally youthful appearance. - SKIN BOOSTERS – Deeply hydrate and stimulate collagen production to improve skin elasticity, firmness, and radiance, resulting in a fresher, healthier glow. - BOTOX – Softens dynamic wrinkles and relaxes muscle tension, particularly in the lower face, preventing downward pull and enhancing overall facial balance. - CHEMICAL PEELS – Improve skin texture, reduce pigmentation and sun damage, and promote a smoother, more even complexion. - THREAD LIFTS – A minimally invasive procedure that gently lifts sagging skin, redefines facial contours, and stimulates collagen production for long-term structural support. - SMILE MAKEOVER – Enhancing facial harmony through teeth whitening, veneers, or “Beauty Aligners" to restore vertical dimension, improve symmetry, and rejuvenate the overall appearance. By strategically combining these treatments, we can restore youthful contours while supporting long-term skin and dental health, ensuring a naturally refreshed and confident look at any age. My goal is to provide tailored, evidence-based care that enhances both aesthetics and well-being, helping patients feel their best at every stage of life. AGEING WELL: A HOLISTIC PERSPECTIVE Are you taking care of your skin? Dr. Darina champions a well-rounded, science-driven approach to ageing that feels more like a beauty ritual than a routine. Body is temple. Sun protection, a balanced diet, and staying hydrated all play their part in maintaining skin health—it's all about giving your skin the nourishment it craves. Stress management, meanwhile, isn’t just a luxury—it's a necessity, and Dr. Darina encourages healthy lifestyle habits to keep you feeling zen. Facial exercises help stimulate collagen production, while a consistent skincare regimen keeps everything elastic and fresh. Regular check-ins with an aesthetic doctor ensure your treatments are as personalised as your skincare routine. And, don’t forget your smile—Dr. Darina’s expertise in oral health, including bite corrections and the use of dental mouthguards, will play a key role in preserving both the function and beauty of your face, whatever your age. • Keeping Mobility as We Age: The Key to Staying Active and Independent

SARAH MONAGHAN, COSTA HEALTH You’re reading a preview of the March/April 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit   MA25 Staying mobile as we age is one of the most effective ways to maintain independence and a fulfilling life. Many people prioritise stretching over mobility, yet mobility training does more to keep us active, strong, and capable. But what exactly is mobility, and how does it help us stay engaged in daily life? WHY MOBILITY MATTERS Mobility means moving freely and efficiently through a full range of motion, combining flexibility, strength, and control. Stretching can lengthen muscles, but it does not always improve movement. For example, someone might touch their toes after stretching but still struggle to squat or climb stairs easily. Mobility training focuses on joint function and practical movement. It strengthens the body for everyday tasks such as reaching overhead, bending, or standing up from a chair. This becomes even more relevant with age as stiffness, imbalances, and weakness can develop. Unlike static stretching, mobility exercises keep the body in motion. This increases blood flow, strengthens connective tissues, and lowers the chance of injury. BENEFITS OF MOBILITY TRAINING Healthier Joints  – Mobility exercises lubricate joints, reducing stiffness and easing discomfort from inactivity or conditions like arthritis. Better Balance and Stability  – Regular practice improves body awareness, lowering the risk of falls. Increased Strength  – Many mobility movements engage multiple muscles, building strength where it matters most. Lower Injury Risk  – Moving through a full range of motion reinforces connective tissues and reduces strain. More Confidence  – Feeling strong and capable allows greater independence and enjoyment of activities. Recently Jane, who had just turned 70, came to see me in the clinic. She was having problems getting up from a chair and felt her mobility declining. We started with some in-clinic treatment to improve her lower back mobility, and afterwards she was given simple at-home exercises to help stay with day-to-day movement and build strength. Here’s what Jane had to say: “After struggling with stiffness and discomfort in my lower back, I visited Sarah to treat the tension. Following this, I was introduced to a few simple yet effective exercises, including the cat-cow stretch and sit-to-stand movements. These exercises were easy to incorporate into my daily routine and made a significant difference. The cat-cow stretch helped improve my flexibility and reduced tension in my lower back, while the sit-to-stand exercises strengthened my glutes and improved my overall mobility. I feel stronger, more stable, and far more comfortable in my movements now. These small, consistent changes have had a big impact !” SIT-TO-STAND CHAIR EXERCISES: 1.     Stand in front of a chair with your feet apart and your arms straight out in front of your shoulders. 2.     Holding your arms out will help you stay balanced as you complete repetitions. 3.     Bend your knees and push your hips down toward the base of the chair. 4.     After a slight pause , press your body upward and stand up to complete the rep. 5.     Two to three sets of 10 reps a day are recommended. ADDING MOBILITY TO DAILY LIFE Mobility training does not require much time. Just 10–15 minutes a day can bring noticeable improvements. Try including simple exercises in the morning, using them as a warm-up, or fitting them in during television breaks. Mobility is about movement, not just stretching. Strengthening joints and improving movement patterns leads to greater confidence in everything from gardening to travelling. A LASTING INVESTMENT For those of us in our later years, mobility work is more than a fitness routine—it supports independence and daily comfort. It keeps the body moving well and free of pain. Shifting the focus from passive stretching to active mobility builds strength, stability, and long-term well-being. Start today and enjoy unrestricted movement for years to come. Age does not limit ability when the proper steps are taken to stay active and strong. If you want to visit the clinic for a check-up or guidance on correcting posture or alignment, contact me and I will be happy to help.   ABOUT SARAH MONAGHAN   I’m Sarah Monaghan, a Chiropractor with over 20 years of experience helping people lead healthier, more active lives. THOUGHTS ON ANTI-AGEING & SELF-IMPOSED-AGEISM: EMBRACING INNER LIGHT AND PASSION Over the years, I’ve immersed myself in the world of wellness and holistic health, and along the way, I’ve learned that ageing gracefully is truly about nurturing your inner light. In my experience, true beauty isn’t determined by how many years we’ve lived but by the energy we cultivate each day and the passion that drives us. What energy are you vibrating with? What is your passion? For me, the joy of dancing is a powerful reminder of life’s vitality. Whether through my Chakra Balance Dance method or simply moving to the rhythm of your heart, dancing is a celebration of life that connects body and spirit. It raises your vibrations, allowing your inner radiance to shine and reminding you of the joy of being alive. You can read more about this passion in my first column here in 55+ Wellness . One of my passions is blending inner and outer beauty, merging glamour with wellness. This fusion has been the theme of many events I’ve organized, such as “Holistic Health & Glamorous Spirituality” and “Fashion & Wellness” in Marbella. It’s wonderful to see how many women are embracing a more multifaceted life. Today, creating a spiritual, soul-guided lifestyle is more accepted and natural than ever. I firmly believe in following your heart and encourage you to wholeheartedly embrace your passions. At the same time, it’s essential to release negativity — let go of what weighs you down, forgive yourself, and practice self-love and acceptance. This not only lightens your emotional load but also allows you to live more fully. When it comes to appearance, especially among women, there is often a tendency to judge — both ourselves and others. I urge you to stop this cycle of judgment. Whether you choose to enhance your appearance with treatments or fillers, or whether you choose to embrace your natural beauty, the choice is yours. When we come from a place of self-love and acceptance, even wrinkles and grey hairs become beautiful marks of experience and wisdom. Ageing is often seen as a challenge, but I view it as an opportunity — a chance to grow wiser and live with renewed awareness and gratitude. Every new day is a gift. Since losing both my parents at the age of 30, I’ve learned to cherish every moment of life. This perspective has brought more joy and ease into my life, and I hope it inspires you as well. As you journey through your 50s and beyond, remember that ageing isn’t a loss but a gain. It’s a time for your inner beauty — born of self-love, gratitude, and passion — to shine brighter than ever. Keep your soul wise, and your spirit forever young. Shine On & Be Younique, Christina x P.S I look forward to connecting with 55+ Wellness  readers! • Golf as Therapy: The Perfect Antidote to a Fast-Paced Life

DR CHIARA CANTONE, LESS IS MORE GOLF METHOD ® You’re reading a preview of the March/April 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit   MA25 We are all witnesses to how frenetic life has become and how urgent it is to slow down, to return to living in the present moment. During my experience as a physiotherapist and golf instructor I have witnessed very frequently how golf can be therapeutic and, nowadays, even necessary to combat the frenetic pace that society imposes on us, while at the same time improving the health of those who practice it.   PHYSICAL BENEFITS: A SPORT THAT STRENGTHENS AND PROTECTS From a physical point of view, we see how the game of golf can balance cholesterol and blood pressure, the main causes of today's major pathologies. Low-medium intensity exercise for a prolonged period of time increases the production of endorphins and adrenaline, with a consequent reduction in cortisol levels and therefore stress. It strengthens bones, preventing and slowing down osteoporosis, regulates diabetes and oxygenates the body, revitalising it.   MENTAL WELL-BEING: MINDFULNESS IN MOTION From a mental point of view, it brings us back to living in the present moment (a technique known as Mindfulness in movement), requires us to manage our emotions for a resolving and non-destructive purpose, prevents senile dementia and Alzheimer's and improves overall concentration and attention.   ENERGY AND VITALITY: THE CHI KUNG CONNECTION From an energetic point of view, the swing movements simulate the movements of Chi Kung and Thai Chi; balancing the energy points (chakras) and raising the vibration of the body's electromagnetic field, through contact with nature and emotions such as peace and spontaneous joy. Low-medium intensity exercise for a long period of time allows for complete oxygenation of the body, balancing the energy flow and promoting general well-being of the organism. A SMART INVESTMENT IN YOUR WELL-BEING Crucial to preventative healthcare for those over 50, golf strengthens motivation and positive effort, improves attention, oxygenation and develops emotional and social intelligence. In fact, it is the perfect sport; it strengthens bonds and new friendships, sharing relaxed, pleasant and fun moments, travelling and having positive experiences together. Golf is undoubtedly an investment in health, in social relationships and in yourself; it is one of the few sports you can play until the last day of your life and, until that moment, enjoy all the benefits it offers. Do yourself a favour - play golf.     ABOUT DR CHIARA CANTONE Sports physiotherapist, golf instructor and wellness consultant. • Ask the Expert:How Pilates Can Ease Back Pain

BOOTCAMP PILATES  RESPONDS You’re reading a preview of the March/April 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit   MA25   Problem: I know I’m not the only one struggling with this—back pain. For me, it started as a dull ache after long car journeys, but now I feel it almost daily—whether it’s stiffness in the morning, an uncomfortable twinge when I bend down too quickly, or a nagging tightness after sitting too long. I’ve spoken to friends, and many of them say the same thing: years of bad posture, muscle imbalances, or just the natural wear and tear of life seem to catch up with us. It’s frustrating because I want to stay active, but some days, my back has other ideas! What can I do to ease the discomfort and keep moving without making things worse?                                                                                                     JEANNE W, ESTEPONA   Answer: You can start relieving your back pain with Pilates exercises at home using just a chair, a wall, or the floor. Here are my recommendations for gentle, effective movements to strengthen your core, mobilise your spine, and ease back discomfort:  PELVIC TILT ON THE FLOOR How to do it : Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart. Gently tilt your pelvis so your lower back presses into the floor, then release. Repeat 8-10 times.  Result: This warms up the lower back, improves spinal mobility, and strengthens the deep core muscles that support your spine.  SEATED SPINAL TWIST  How to Do It:  You can do this sitting on a staircase or sturdy chair. Keeping your feet flat on the ground, place one hand on the opposite knee and gently twist your torso, looking over your shoulder. Hold for 5-10 seconds, then switch sides.  Result:  Twisting helps improve spinal flexibility and releases tight muscles along the sides of your back.          WALL ANGELS How to Do It: Stand with your back against a wall, feet a few inches away from it. Press your lower back into the wall and raise your arms into a "goalpost" position. Slowly glide your arms up and down the wall, keeping contact as much as possible. Repeat 8-10 times.  Result: This strengthens the upper back and shoulders, improving posture and reducing strain on the lower back.    HAMSTRING STRETCH (USING A CHAIR OR WALL)   How to Do It:  Sit on the edge of a chair, extend one leg straight out with your heel on the floor, and keep your back straight. Gently hinge forward from your hips until you feel a stretch in the back of your thigh. Hold for 20-30 seconds and switch sides.  Result:  Tight hamstrings can contribute to lower back pain. This stretch helps release them and reduces tension on your spine.  CHILD’S POSE How to Do It: Kneel on the floor, sit back on your heels, and reach your arms forward as you lower your chest to the ground. Hold for 20-30 seconds, breathing deeply.  Result:  This gentle stretch releases tension in the lower back and hips while calming the mind.    STANDING ROLL-DOWN How to Do It: Stand with your feet hip-width apart, knees slightly soft. Slowly roll down through your spine, vertebra by vertebra, letting your head and arms hang heavy. Roll back up slowly. Repeat 5-6 times.  Result : This improves spinal mobility, stretches the back, and increases circulation to tight muscles.    TIPS FOR SUCCESS - Move slowly and with control—never force a stretch or movement.  - Focus on your breathing to help relax tight muscles and reduce tension.  - Practice these exercises 2-3 times a week for noticeable improvement.    These simple but powerful movements will help ease your backache and build the strength and flexibility needed to prevent future discomfort.   Wishing you a pain-free and mobile future!    The Bootcamp Team x             ABOUT BOOTCAMP PILATES Welcome to Studio Bootcamp Pilates Espana, your sensational fitness oasis in Estepona. • Age Concern Marbella

STEVE MARSHALL, AGE CONCERN You’re reading a preview of the March/April 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit   MA25 Age Concern Marbella-San Pedro is a relatively young Charity (7 years), built on the realisation that the older English-speaking community were being neglected when it comes to “living their best lives”. We are fully registered, legal, and our Constitution has been approved by the Junta de Andalucia   Our vision is clear, “To help ALL our clients live their best lives”. We take a holistic approach. Key ingredients are care, compassion, companionship, friendship and fun - and we do have fun! Once you have that, the practical steps fall into place. Older people sometimes feel that society has labelled them with a “sell-by” date. As if their usefulness has simply expired. That is not just sad; it´s painfully short-sighted.   Whether you have funds behind you or not, healthy or infirm, as you age certain things will affect us all. Friends and family either move or pass away. Decreasing mobility means that your world inevitably becomes smaller and the dreaded scourge of Loneliness and Isolation is ever-present.   Loneliness is quite different from wishing to be on your own at times. Loneliness eats away at you. We see individuals who just have no desire to do very much - and that includes eating healthily or, worst case scenario, maintaining personal hygiene. After all, why would you want to make the effort when you don't see anyone?   Part of “living your best life” is knowing you have a support network in the form of friends and a Charity that is willing and able to support you. If this vision resonates, these are some of the practical steps that Age Concern Marbella-San Pedro offers:   ●     Weekly [1]   coffee mornings that are easily accessible - where you can meet up with old friends and make new ones. There is that sense of “family” at all our get-togethers that so many older people crave. Each one is run by an experienced volunteer who is there to help, and “break the ice” for new members.   ●     The essential backup from our Welfare Advice Service is available 5 days a week, providing practical help, support and friendship. At Age Concern Marbella-San Pedro we always have the time to LISTEN.   ●     Visiting people at home or in their care home is integral to the ethos of the Charity because we firmly believe that nobody should ever feel alone. Our partnership with the care home CK La Quinta  is one example, where a wealth of musical talent is put on as free weekly entertainment for the residents - we are all-inclusive, whether you are able to visit us or not.   ●     Our volunteers are the backbone of Age Concern Marbella-San Pedro. They provide a wide range of services, including taking clients to their medical appointments and helping with shopping. Translators can also assist at the Hospital or local Dr visits. In fact, the list is endless. Our volunteers all offer their time and talents without charge.   ●     As part of our Holistic approach, we have a Community Centre in San Pedro offering a wide range of interests - from help with I.T. to chair yoga, and much more. We also have lunches and day trips with something for everyone. Sometimes you may want to discuss a problem face to face - that´s why we put aside EVERY Monday morning for you. Worried about your lack of mobility? Rest assured we have a wide selection of mobility aids for personal loan. So if you or a loved one needs us, or you would like to find out more about helping us to support our older English-speaking community to “live their best lives”, please call or WhatsApp our Helpline number on 689 35 51 98  - the line is open 40 hours a week daily, from 10.00am to 18.00pm - or drop us a line at info@ageconcernmarbella.com You’re reading a preview of the March/April 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. • Ageing Well: Tap into the Fountain of Youth Inside You!

KATHRYN LINDUP  You’re reading a preview of the March/April 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit   MA25 The most powerful anti-ageing tool you have isn't found in a bottle, a pill, or even the gym — it’s your mind. Your mind is the most potent healing force on the planet, and the single most important shift you must make to look and feel younger is to change your thinking.   Scientific research from Tufts University Medical School has revealed that the power of the mind can make the body 5 to 12 years younger. Imagine that for a moment. No cream or supplement can do that, but your mind can.   Yes, diet, vitamins, a good skincare routine and exercise all play their roles, but they become exponentially more effective when combined with the power of your mind and your belief system. Your thoughts are like a blueprint, and your body follows that blueprint every single day.   Consider how life was for previous generations. Ageing was seen as inevitable and unstoppable. People had tougher lives focused on survival, raising children, and putting food on the table. There was little time or mental space to prioritize youthfulness. But today, the world has changed. Retirement no longer signals the beginning of your final years; instead, the start of an exciting new chapter - retiring from work does not mean retiring from life! This shift in perspective alone is proof that the mind’s beliefs about ageing are powerful. If, like so many people, you have concerns about ageing, it’s crucial to understand the truth. Your body doesn’t age in the way you’ve been led to believe. Here’s a mind-blowing fact: 98% of the atoms in your body weren’t there a year ago. The majority of your cells have the extraordinary ability to renew themselves. No matter how old you are, most of your body is only about 10 years old or younger. Even your skeleton is brand new every 10 years. You are quite literally a walking, talking, ever-renewing miracle! This is why your thoughts, beliefs, and expectations about ageing have an enormous impact on how you age. Your body must mirror the instructions it receives from your mind. The most powerful force in your mind is its need to act in ways that match your thinking. This is true whether your thoughts are positive or negative. In fact, your mind cannot tell the difference between a joke and a fact, so be mindful of the language you use about yourself, even if it is in jest. If you say, “I’m too old for this” or “I’m past my prime,” your mind accepts it as a command. Your body’s cells are listening. But here’s the good news: you can change it. The simplest, most powerful thing you can do is to flip your self-talk. Create new, positive beliefs and repeat them daily. Repetition is how the mind learns. Here’s how you can start flipping your thoughts and words today: ● Instead of “I’m looking worse every day,” say, “I look wonderful and radiant/vibrant.” ● Instead of “These wrinkles are awful,” say, “These are tiny, beautiful/handsome character lines that show my story.” ● Instead of “I’m not bad for my age,” say, “I am an outstanding example of ageing well.” ● Instead of “I’m always so tired,” say, “I allow myself to rest so I can be filled with abundant energy.”   Every morning, start your day with powerful, positive affirmations. The words you say to yourself become who you are. Here are some affirmations you can use daily: ● “I am filled with zest, enthusiasm, and joy for life.” ● “I have boundless energy, vitality, and strength.” ● “My mind is sharp, quick, and agile.” ● “I have a wonderful memory. My mind works like Google, instantly retrieving any information I need.” Say these words daily. Say them out loud with certainty. Repeat them like your life depends on it — because it does. Your body is listening to every word you say. Your cells are listening. Your future self is listening. Use the power of your mind, and you’ll discover that the fountain of youth was inside you all along. Click here or on the QR code to claim your X discount. • Reinventing Ourselves: A New Look at Microdosing

AMANDA GEDEON You’re reading a preview of the March/April 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine. For the full version, packed with even more insights, inspiration, and exclusive content, visit   MA25 At any stage of life, we hold the power to reinvent ourselves. The human brain is an extraordinary machine, constantly working to reduce the uncertainty of the world around us. From the moment we are born, it begins gathering information about the people we meet, the experiences we have, and the world we encounter through all our senses. It then creates predictions based on these experiences, guiding us through life. This process, called predictive coding, forms the foundation of our Default Mode Network (DMN)—the seat of our ego, and effectively, our personal "operating system." As we grow older, our brains become more efficient at processing information, helping us adapt to new situations and survive. However, this efficiency often comes at a cost: it can make our thinking more rigid. The beliefs we've formed through years of experience can become so ingrained  they limit our ability to see things from different perspectives. This rigidity can impact our relationships, our mental well-being, and even our overall sense of happiness. Family conflicts, missed opportunities, unspoken words, and unfulfilled dreams are just a few examples of how these limitations can hold us back. But what if there was a way to break free from these constraints, to see the world with fresh eyes and rediscover a sense of possibility? This is where microdosing comes in. WHAT IS MICRODOSING? Microdosing is the practice of taking a very small, "sub-hallucinogenic" amount of a psychedelic substance—typically around 5–10% of  what is considered a hallucinogenic dose. According to The Microdosing Institute, this practice can enhance creativity, focus, mood, general well being and overall life satisfaction. Microdosing can be done with various psychedelic substances, such as psilocybin (found in certain mushrooms), LSD, ayahuasca, and mescaline. While access and legality vary, psilocybin is one of the most commonly used substances. It is naturally occurring, and in places like Spain, consumption and possession is legal, although sale and distribution remain regulated. Unlike full doses of psychedelics, microdosing doesn't cause visual effects or distortions of reality. Instead, microdosers often report subtle changes—such as increased mental clarity, better mood and a heightened sense of connection to the present moment. The beauty of microdosing is that it integrates seamlessly into your daily life.   You can still go about your usual activities—work, exercise, socializing, driving—while experiencing these subtle benefits.   HOW DOES PSILOCYBIN WORK? Psilocybin works by interacting with serotonin receptors in the brain, particularly the 5-HT2a receptors. This interaction helps reduce the activity of the DMN, the part of the brain responsible for maintaining our sense of self and personal beliefs. When the DMN becomes less active, the brain’s thinking patterns become more flexible, allowing for new perspectives and opportunities. As we age, maintaining mental agility and cognitive health becomes a priority. Our brain’s ability to form new connections (neuroplasticity) slows down with age. Microdosing supports neuroplasticity by loosening the rigid thinking patterns that develop over time. It promotes a more open, flexible mindset, helping to keep our minds sharp, creative, and adaptable. Whatever our age or challenges , this could mean improved focus, better memory, and a greater ability to navigate life’s challenges with a clear and open mind.   THE BENEFITS OF MICRODOSING: ADDRESSING MENTAL HEALTH AND EMOTIONAL WELL - BEING Medical studies, including research by Johns Hopkins University, have shown that psilocybin can significantly reduce anxiety, depression, and even certain neurological conditions, particularly in older adults. This research suggests that psilocybin may help improve mental health and emotional well-being in people facing end-of-life concerns, PTSD, dementia, and other challenges. Dementia: There is growing evidence that psilocybin and other psychedelics may have a positive effect on individuals living with dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease. Studies are investigating how psychedelics can help alleviate some of the emotional distress and agitation associated with dementia, promoting a sense of well-being and clarity. While more research is needed, early results show that psilocybin might help ease the emotional and cognitive burden that dementia brings, even providing moments of lucidity and emotional connection for both patients and caregivers. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Traditional treatments for OCD, such as therapy and medication, don’t work for everyone, and the repetitive thought patterns can be difficult to break. Psilocybin, through its action on serotonin receptors, has been shown to help “reset” the brain’s neural circuits, potentially disrupting the persistent, repetitive thought patterns seen in OCD. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): For those dealing with the aftermath of trauma, PTSD can be deeply debilitating, affecting emotional health, relationships, and overall quality of life. By reducing the hyperactivity of the DMN, microdosing may help individuals “reframe” their trauma, allowing them to process it in a new way. In clinical trials, psilocybin has helped some individuals overcome deeply ingrained trauma, providing relief from nightmares, flashbacks, and emotional numbing. Microdosing offers a potential avenue for emotional healing. We all know people who  face significant mental health challenges, from depression and anxiety to loneliness and existential concerns. As we move into later stages of life, these emotional hurdles can become more pronounced, especially when facing retirement, loss of loved ones or dealing with life transitions. Research has shown that microdosing can significantly reduce these challenges. The benefits are particularly relevant to older adults looking for ways to improve their emotional health without resorting to prescription medication or intensive therapy. For those dealing with loneliness or grief, microdosing has the potential to reconnect us with a sense of purpose and joy, helping us see life’s possibilities with renewed perspective.   MICRODOSING: A PRACTICAL APPROACH FOR OLDER ADULTS One of the most appealing aspects of microdosing is its adaptability to different lifestyles. It’s important to know that microdosing doesn’t require any change to your routine, it can be integrated smoothly into your day-to-day activities—whether that’s  working, golfing, exercising, trading or enjoying time with family and friends. Dr. James Fadiman, a pioneering transpersonal psychologist known as "the father of microdosing," has spent decades researching the effects of small doses of psychedelics. His work, which began after the discoveries of Dr. Albert Hofmann (who famously synthesized LSD), has shown that microdosing can promote a sense of well-being, improve creativity, and even help individuals break free from negative habits. According to Fadiman, microdosing helps "reconnect" the body and mind, improving relationships with both. Many people report benefits such as better sleep, healthier eating habits, clearer thinking, increased energy, and even the resolution of long-standing emotional issues or addictions.   THE PERSONALIZED APPROACH TO MICRODOSING Microdosing isn’t a one-size-fits-all practice. It requires careful calibration as the optimal dose can vary from person to person. Dosage is based on how the substance interacts with your nervous system, which is influenced by a variety of factors, both internal and external. Microdosing is typically practiced over a period of six to ten weeks, following a structured protocol. It works best when guided by a qualified facilitator—a role I’m proud to fill. As a certified microdosing facilitator and transpersonal psychology coach, I’ve witnessed firsthand how this practice can bring about profound change, both personally and professionally. Microdosing helped me find clarity in my own life, and I’m passionate about helping others do the same.             SAFETY NOTICE: INTEGRATING MICRODOSING SAFELY It’s important to note I am not recommending the use of illegal substances. I also want to stress that microdosing may not be suitable for everyone. There are specific health conditions that may not be compatible with this practice, which is why an initial free consultation is essential. Some people find that microdosing can complement their existing treatment plans, helping them feel more balanced and present. Others may need to adjust their medications to ensure there are no negative interactions. I work closely with medical professionals, including a registered doctor and psychologist, to ensure a responsible and ethical approach to microdosing. Your safety and well-being are my top priority. If this article resonates with you, I invite you to reach out. I offer 1 to 1 consultations tailored to your health and personal goals. Feel free to contact me at transpersonalmicrodosing@gmail.com  or ( +34) 695153139.     FURTHER READING 1.        FDA Calls Psychedelic Psilocybin a 'Breakthrough Therapy' for Severe Depression | Live Science 2.        Psychedelics as a Treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease Dementia 3.        The Therapeutic Potential of Psilocybin - PMC You’re reading a preview of the March/April 2025 issue of 55+ Wellness Magazine.
